Who Are We?
We are a congregation of the Lord's church located at 198 Main Street in Pikeville, Kentucky. We are a group of baptized believers who strive to serve God as He has commanded in His Word. Jesus, the Son of God, said, "I will build My church" and it is that church to which we belong (Matthew 16:18).
The Church of Christ does not claim to be any denomination. We are not governed by a central headquarters or any other centralized organization. The church is autonomous (self-governing) under the authority of only one head which is Christ. We have no creed or declaration of faith besides the Bible. Specifically, we follow the New Covenant which includes the teachings of Jesus and his apostles.
This church is an independent local congregation of Christians, i.e., believers who have been baptized into Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and who are committed to live by faith in Christ. We are joined together to serve God and to encourage each other to become more faithful to Christ.
We all earnestly desire to come to a full understanding of the teaching of Christ. While we work together toward this goal, we agree to be in subjection to one another in matters of opinion and not to be contentious about matters we may differ on. Our joint action is based on those things that we all agree the Bible teaches a local church is authorized to do.
THE CHURCH OF CHRIST
1. The Bible is its only guide (Romans 1:16; 1 Thessalonians 2:13)
2. Wears a Biblical Name (Romans 16:16)
3. Established at the right place (Isaiah 2:2,3; Acts 2)
4. Established at the right time (Joel 2:28-32; Acts 2)
5. Established on the right person (Matthew 16:18; Acts 2:36)
6. Saved are in it (Ephesians 5:23; Acts 2:47)
7. Its members are enrolled in heaven (Hebrews 12:23)
8. Membership is obtained by obedience to God’s commands, including baptism
(Acts 2:41-47; 1 Corinthians 12:13)
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE "JUST A CHRISTIAN"?
It means trying to be like the first century church in work, worship and teaching. They were just Christians - why can't we be the same?
It means being an independent and autonomous church, not part of any denominational structure - just like the Christians in the New Testament.
It means worshiping like the people in the New Testament did.
It means believing and practicing what the New Testament church believed and practiced.
It
means an end to "hyphenated Christianity" where some human-centered name or
creedal position is attached to the term Christian. We hear this all the time:
"I'm this kind of Christian" or "I'm a --------- Christian." Where do we read
about that kind of thinking in the New Testament? Why can't we be just
Christians like in the New Testament?
In short, it means being what the first believers were: just Christians.
We are dedicated to that ideal. We just want to study the scriptures and see New
Testament Christianity freshly, in purity and simplicity. If that thought
intrigues you, then browse our site and stop in to visit with us. You'll find
the quest for "just Christians" to be tremendously challenging and rewarding. We
pray we'll be a help to you along the way.
